April News

Mukwonago High School graciously hosted our HDI meeting in April, and talked about their IT Academy. It’s truly one of a kind, as they are learning advanced level IT curriculum and partnering with area businesses to provide student internships for real world experiences. The program has gained a lot of traction, with over 70 students signed up next semester.

Dave DuVarney, President at Talavant, presented on Business Intelligence, and talked about how his company is moving information forward with Agile/Scrum methodologies, and transforming business intelligence into business dollars.

Some key takeaways include the roles he defined in a Scrum environment:
  • Team Lead - Decides which course to take, set the sail for the ship, determines a broad course of action to take
  • Scrum Master - Keeps team priorities in line with the team lead
  • Analysts - Problem solvers, Critical thinkers, they are feeding materials into the machine and evangelizing the value, and taking that back to the business – they are the ones selling it to the business operations
  • Developers - Moving large data from A to B, building reports and Modeling data. They need to aggregate data across systems, set speeds, targets, and modeling.
  • Support - Troubleshooting problems when they come up

Other takeaways when implementing Scrum/Agile: Keys are to set the cadence, consistent movement, and get feedback, and don’t forget about the technical debt. If no cadence is set, staff will want more and will become disruptive to the sprint.

Talk Show Format a Big Hit – And we have our winners!

This month’s meeting was a huge success! We had 29 people that showed up out of the 41 that RSVP’d. It was great to see some new faces – and some familiar ones too! Everyone enjoyed the facility, the food and the “Talk Show” format – it was a chance for people to get to know Jason Wischer (our chapter president), Katie Wagner (the nominator of both of our winners), Jennifer Courtright (our featured member in the spotlight) and Phil Gerbyshak (our chapter advisor, and our Jimmy Fallon for the evening) a little better personally.

The winners have already been contacted for their Regional interviews so hopefully we’ll get someone to represent us at Nationals again.

In February, we are planning to be at Thomson Reuters for an IT Practitioners Panel – and we need YOU to be a panelist. We’d like to have 4-6 people, any type of support desk is fine. Team Leads, Managers and Directors – if you’re interested, contact Jill Weber.

In March – Jill is working with Microsoft to secure a speaker, and we would love to host it at YOUR location. Again, contact Jill with questions.

In April we’ll be at Charter in Mequon and we want to know what YOU want to know! Jill – Jill – Jill. Send her a note. She’ll help you.
